Dear Mr. Crutchfield:
A letter dated April 9, 1984 provided information concerning interim actions RGSE will take until full compliance with 10 CFR 50 Appendix R is achieved.
The purpose of this letter is to provide clarification and additional information requested by NRC Staff members.
RG&E committed to provide a fire watch in two plant fire areas until certain modifications can be completed-These fire watches will be continuous fire watches, not fire watch patrols'n addition, the fire watch in fire area ABBM will remain in effect until the suppression system upgrades near stairways and hatches are completed and any circuits required for safe shutdown which are not currently covered by automatic suppression systems are protected from fire damage.
The protection may be provided by suppression systems or other means.
The April 9, 1984 letter committed to develop, before startup from the current outage, procedures to be used in certain fire areas to bring the plant to stable shutdown.
To meet Staff requirements and to provide an additional margin of safety, RGSE will revise these procedures to include guidelines for achieving cold shutdown following a fire in the control room using equipment which is free of fire damage.
These additional guidelines will be developed within three months of returning Ginna to service from the current outage.
Because of time constraints on actions that we have committed to complete prior to startup, your prompt attention to review these actions is necessary.
