Docket No. 50-244 LICENSEE: Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation pe 14 1986 FACILITY: R.

E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant

SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF DECEMBER 5, 1985, MEETING ON MASONRY WALLS The NRC staff along with the Franklin Research Center (FRC) staff and the FRC's consultant met with the licensee and its representatives to discuss the qualification of the control building masonry walls at the Ginna plant.

A list of attendees is attached.

The licensee is using a non-linear analysis technique, similar to the one used at the SONGS-1 facility, to qualify the masonry walls when subjected to out-of-plane seisrqic loads.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the correlation between the results predicted by the non-linear analysis technique and actual responses observed during the tests conducted for the SONGS-1 walls.

This correlation study was required to judge the validity of the non-linear analysis technique.

The licensee presented results of its correlation analysis which consisted of comparisons between test and predicted results for key parameters.

These parameters included maximum deflection, rebar strains, masonry strains, yield length of rebar and crack size.

Additional time-history comparisons were also presented.

The staff found good agreement between the predicted and tested results of key parameters thus demonstrating adequate validation of the non-linear analysis technique.

The licensee plans to now apply this technique to the Ginna control building masonry walls.

The licensee's presentation contained proprietary information and, therefore, was not made available to the staff at the end of the meeting.

However, the licensee plans to submit this information in a formal report.
