DRESDEN UNIT-3 (ILDRS-3)
DOCKET f/050-249 During a routine inspection while the Unit 3 reactor was at 557 MWe and 1783 MWt on July 24, 1978, a pinhole leak was found in the 3A reactor feed pump minimum flow line (3~320SA~6"), The leak was located at the top of the pipe approximately 3 inches downstream of the 3X6 reducer in the 6 inch diameter piping, A pinhole leak had been previously found in this same location and had been repaired by pad welding as reported in R,O, #78~05/03L~O, Docket #050~249. Other failures have also occurred on these lines on both Units 2 and 3, System operation was in no way degraded 6y the small leak,
~o adverse effects on publi0 health or safety resulted as a consequence of this event s{nce any leakage would have entered the turfiine building floor drain system with no resulting release of radioactive material to the public, The cause of the pinhole leak is believed to be erosion due to cav:i1ation and the flow characteristics in the pipe, Inunediate corrective action included welding a patch over the deteriorated section of pipe.
Long term *corrective action will include replacing the pressure control* valve and resizing the restricting orifice on each minimum flow line to decrease the flow through the line.
