to Inspection Report No. 50-244/93-07 R.E.

Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-244

Dear Mr. Joyner:

This letter pro which resents vides comment on the subject NRC inspection report p

NRC's recent assessment of our radiological controls program.

RGEE appreciates the constructive comments provided in the report and is addressing each recommendation for improvement in our program.

Although a written response was not required, we would like to provide a clarification to the source term reduction discussion contained in Section 8.3 of the inspection report.,

While further opportunities certainly exist and are being pursued in the area of source term reduction, Ginna Station has initiated and completed a number of activities over the past decade:

~

Steam Generator bowl decontamination using the Can-Decon process (1982) a Adoption and use of EPRI recommended primary chemistry guidelines for coolant pH control (1983)

~

Decontamination of Reactor Coolant Pump impeller using Can-Decon process (performed 1984)

Use of optimized fuel design, including zircaloy replacement of stainless steel guide tubes and inconel grid straps (since 1984)

Flushing and removal of hot spots from Auxiliary Building Sub-Basement Sump Tank (performed 1989) 93070iOi44 930bi7 PDR ADQCK 05000244

In addition, we have completed a cost-benefit analysis for the desludging of the Waste Hold-Up Tank, the Auxiliary Building sub-basement sump and floor drains.

This work is scheduled for completion in July, 1993.

Other initiatives in the areas of microfiltration, cobalt-bearing valve replacement and decontamination are under evaluation or in early stages of implementation.

Thank you for the constructive suggestions provided in Inspection Report 93-07, and be assured of our continued attentiveness to all aspects of our RP Program, and in particular to those areas noted for AIdQK enhancements.
