Containment Purging During Normal Plant Operation R.E. Ginna Nuclear Power Plant Docket No. 50-244
Dear llr. Ziemann:
Your letter dated November 29, 1978 requested restrictions be placed on containment purging during normal operation and an evaluation of the ability of the containment isolation valves to close under postulated design basis accident conditions be performed.
Our letter of January 2,
1979 placed restrictions on purging during normal operation, as required, and stated an evaluation of valve closure would be completed by July 2, 1979.
An evaluation of the ability of the containment purge valves to close during accident conditions has been made.
The valve specifications require the valves to close during no flow conditions within a specified time.
The valve manufacturer has performed a
review of the design of our valves and of model tests and has confirmed that the valves will close as fast or faster under flow conditions than they do under no-flow conditions.
We are presently performing additional analyses of the integrity of the valve to assure its continued integrity following post-accident closure.
We will inform you of the results of these analyses upon their completion.
