ATTN: Mr. Dennis L. Ziemann, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 52 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555

Dear Mr. Ziemann:

k~

(I "i('n March 15, 1978 we informed you of the Westinghouse Electric Corporation schedule and plans for permanent, resolution of the staff concerns about upper plenum injection (UPI) of emergency core cooling system (ECCS) water. At that time we projected a schedule which called for completion of the Westinghouse work near the end of 1978. After that schedule was submitted Westing-house discovered a logic inconsistency in the manner in which the zirconium-water reaction was handled in ECCS calculations. As a result, manpower was shifted from the UPI project to resolution of the zirconium-water inconsistency and completion of the UPI work has been delayed by 3 or 4 months. The revised schedule for completion of the Westinghouse UPI work is shown below:

Pro ram Work Com letion Date Model Development December 1978 Generic Sensitivity Studies January 1979 Plant Calculation April 1979 It, will be desirable to discuss the capabilities of the com-pleted model with you prior to performing extensive calculations.

If the NRC staff requires changes to the completed model, sensitivity studies and plant calculations may be postponed to incorporate model changes.

Exxon Nuclear Corporation is also working to resolve staff concerns about UPI. The Exxon schedule is as follows:
