Inspection and Structural Capability of the Dresden Units 2 and 3 Tori

Dear Mr. Boyd:

This is in response to your letter of March 13 concerning the inspection and evaluation of the tori for Dresden Units 2 and 3.

At the present time, Dresden Unit 2 is undergoing a refueling outage.

During this outage, the relief valve piping supports have been modified to accommodate the b1owdown reaction forces with a greater margin of safety.

This modification is complete.

Prior to this modification, the supports had been inspected and no indication of distress was found.

In addition, during the present outage, the baffles will be inspected.

The torus is presently being drained and this inspection of the baffles should be completed within the next week.

An inspection of the piping supports and baffles in the Dresden Unit 3 torus has been scheduled for January 1973.

This schedule is based on the fact that no abnormal structural conditions were observed on Unit 2 during its inspection.

In addition, the relief valve piping was modified approximately one year ago and is not the same as the Monticello design.

Since startup,* Unit 2 has op.rated approximately 17 months at power.

During that time, the relief valves were used on several I

1.

occasions.

As of ~pril 1, 1972; Unit 3 will have been operating approximately 7 moriths and therefore by January will have been operating less than Unit 2.

Since no distress has been found in Unit 2, we feel confident that Unit 3 will not have a problem.

Should you require any additional information, please let me know.

Very truly yours, z:i~of~de Wayne L. Stiede Nuclear Licensing Administrator 1
