By letter dated August 27, 1993, Florida Power 3 Light Comp'any (FPL) requested approval of an improved m'ethodology, "Extended Statistical Combination of Uncertainties (ESCU)," for applications described in the report CEN-371(F)-P dated July 1989.

The report. describes the application of ESCU to the calculation of aggregate analytical uncertainties associated with Departure from Nucleate Boiling, related analog protection and monitoring system setpoints for St.

Lucie Unit 2.

I The staff has reviewed the above request and finds the ESCU methodology acceptable for application to St. Lucie Unit 2 when Combustion Engineering 16x16 fuel assemblies are utilized.

The enclosed Safety Evaluation contains details of the staff's review.

Enclosed also are new pages B 2-1, B 2-4, and B 3/4 2-2 and their overleafs.
