EVENT DESCRIPTION MANATEE IN PSL COOLING WATER INTAKE CANAL On February 1,
- 1991, at approximately 1000
- hours, Environmental Affairs personnel were notified by Applied Biology, Inc.
personnel, biological consultants working for
- FPL, that an adult West Indian Manatee had been observed swimming in the plant's condenser cooling water intake canal.
The animal appeared to be healthy and was not at immediate risk as a result of being in the
- canal, nor were any plant operations being impacted by the presence of the animal.
The manatee appears to have entered the intake canal through one of the cooling systems intake pipes which connect the canal to the Atlantic Ocean.
While swimming close to the intake pipe
- area, the animal may have investigated the structure and entered.
Several of the concrete panels on the upper portion of the velocity cap structures had previously been damaged and had been removed.
The velocity caps have undergone inspection and are going to be repaired during 1991.
Following discovery of the
- manatee, the surveillance of the intake canal was increased to ensure the safety of the animal and that no other manatees are present.
FPL feels that this is an isolated and unusual event, particularly since it is the first such occurrence in the 15 year operation history of the plant.
FPL personnel are consulting with U.S.
Fish and Wildlife Service personnel and the Florida Department of Natural Resources on a
continuing basis regarding the safe removal of the animal from the canal.
Upon
- removal, the animal will either be released into the Indian River adjacent to the plant or will be taken to Sea World in Orlando, Florida for rehabilitation.
