Welcome The purpose of tonights Open House is to discuss the NRCs assessment of Palisades performance in 2016, the NRCs actions to ensure the safety of Palisades, and issues of interest to the public.

Feedback We are always looking for feedback on what we can do to make our meetings with the public more effective. With that in mind, please consider completing a feedback form after the meeting.

Additional Information Additional information about the NRCs inspection programs and how we ensure that nuclear power plants operate safely can be found on our website at www.nrc.gov.

About the NRC The NRC is an independent agency created by Congress. Our mission is to license and regulate the nations civilian use of radioactive materials in the United States to protect public health and safety, promote the common defense and security, and protect the environment.

Meeting Agenda 6:00-6:10 pm: Introductions/Agenda Discussion 6:10-8:00 pm: Open House/Information Sessions During information sessions, the NRC staff not involved in the presentation will be available to dialogue with the public in the open house area.

Poster Topics Reactor Oversight Process Julie Boettcher, Acting Senior Resident Inspector Kevin Pusateri, Acting Resident Inspector Tritium and Environmental Monitoring Valerie Myers, Senior Health Physicist John Cassidy, Senior Health Physicist Decommissioning Activities and High Level Waste Storage Rhex Edwards, Senior Health Physicist Ted Carter, Senior Project Manager Information Session Schedule 6:15-6:30 pm: The NRCs Eyes and Ears If you ever wondered what a Palisades resident inspector does, this information session is a great way to find out. This discussion will include a summary of a wide range of inspections our resident inspectors performed last year.

6:45-7:00 pm: The Decommissioning Process Once a nuclear power plant decides to permanently shut down, it must follow specific steps per NRCs regulations. The NRC continues to ensure that the plant remains safe until the radiological decommis-sioning process is complete. This information session aims to provide an outline of the decommissioning process.

7:15-7:30 pm: Environmental Monitoring During Decommissioning After the plant ceases to operate, the NRC requires the facility to continue to monitor and assess its potential impact on the environment. This session will focus on how our inspectors continue to independently assess these environmental monitoring activities.

Thank You We appreciate your participation tonight.

Maintaining a dialogue with the public is a high priority for the NRC and your attendance here tonight is critical to our accomplishing this goal.

Meeting Format To more directly engage with you, tonights meeting will be conducted in an open house format, which is different from previous public meetings. Our resident and specialist inspectors will be available to talk with you face-to-face, instead of having a formal NRC presentation followed by moderated Qs &

As.

This meeting will include brief information sessions designed to provide basic infor-mation on three expressed topics of interest to the community to facilitate a subsequent informal discussion with NRC staff in an open house format. The topics include:

(1) Roles and responsibilities of our resident inspectors; (2) NRCs inspection programs after a plant stops operating; and (3) NRCs independent environmental monitoring programs and inspections.

Our goal is to answer your questions, listen to your concerns, and share information about how we ensure the safe operation of Palisades.

As always, we look forward to hearing your thoughts on this new format as they will help inform our decision on the conduct of future annual assessment public meetings.
