Dear Mr. Davis:
Quad Cities Station Units 1 and 2 Response to NRC Questions Regarding Embedment Plate Assessment Program NRC Docket Nos. 50-237/249 and 50-254/265 In response to a May 7, 1987 meeting between your Mr. J. Gavula, representatives of NRR (including Mr. R. Lepenski), Commonwealth Edison and Sargent & Lundy, attached please find information pertaining to our ongoing embedment plate assessment program.
During the meeting, questions pertaining to four issues arose.
The issues can be characterized as follows:
JGD Item 1:
Questions regarding whether the combination of axial and moment l
loads for the embedment plate assessment program meet the linear interaction equations; Item 2:
Discussions regarding linearly combining loads whose allowables were developed using a non-linear analysis; Item 3:
Calculations for ultimate plate capacity based on yield line theory, for tension loads applied in an exterior and interior region of an embedment plate. Additionally, nonimal stress calculations for tension loads were to be provided for Operating Basis Earthquake (OBE), Safe Shutdown Earthquake (SSE), and upper limit cases for exterior and interior regions of the embedment plates; Item 4:
Commonwealth Edison was to provide sample calculations for the assessment of an embedment plate.
