Dear Hr. Crutchfield:
This responds to your August 31 letter in which you request information regarding species protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, that may inhabit the vicinity of the Dresden Nuclear Power Plant, Grundy County, Illinois.
To facilitate compliance with Section 7(c) of the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, Federal Agencies are required to obtain from the *Fish and Wildlife Service information concerning any species, listed or proposed to be listed, which may be present in the area of a proposed action.
Therefore, we are furnishing you the following list of species which may be present in the concerned area:
Classification Common Name Endangered Bald eagle Scientific Name Haliaeetus leucoceohalus Habitat Winters along large rivers The bald eagle is an occasional winter visitor to the vicinity of Dresden Nuclear Power Plant where it may catch fish in open water near the lock and dam or in the power plant's cooling ponds. It may utilize shoreline trees for perching and feeding.
We are unaware of any night roosts in the area.
There is no designated critical habitat in the project area at this time.
Since the location. of transmission lines is only in a conceptual stage, we cannot adequately assess impacts on the bald eagle.
However, provided that there will be no clearing of riparian trees or of large, individual perching trees, we anticipate that there will be no effect of the project on the bald eagle.
This precludes the need for further action on this project as required by the 1973 Endangerd Species Act, as amended.
Should this project be modified or inforcation regarding transmission line corridors become available that indicates listed or proposed species may be affected, consultation should be initiated.
