As a result of our letter of July 7, 1981, your request has been held in abeyance until n1 nety days after the date of issuance of the Safety Evaluation for the facilities.

On J.uly 31, 1981, the NRC staff recommended to the Comm1 ss1on, in response to an industry petition, ~hat the June 30, 1982 deadl1 ne for equipment qualification be extended to June 30, 1983, wJth 11m1ted provisions for further extensions on a case-by-case basis.

  • Jn addition, the NRC staff has: provided clarifications on many of the te~hnical issues in this area.

The underlying reasons fo.r.your original request, regarding a hearing, may be affected by the Commission's action on the staff's submittal or recent staff interpretations of the requirements. Ttterefore, in or<ier to allow you to consider all recent or iminent developments, we will, upon your affirmation, hold your original request in abeyance for up to:**thirty days after the Commission has completed its action ~n the petition.

By that time, we ask that you inform us of your intent, and if you. pursue a hearing, of the _speti f1 c issues you 1 ntend to raise in the proceeding.*
