The NRC Mission The NRCs mission with respect to decommissioning is to ensure a safe transition from operations to decommissioning, and the safe completion of radiological decommissioning.

NRC will continue to license and inspect the plant until the licensee demonstrates that the residual radioactivity meets the license termination criteria and NRC terminates the license.

Reactor Decommissioning Program Status

• Progress in the area of decommissioning:

• 10 power reactors have terminated their licenses after meeting the NRCs criteria for unrestricted release

• 20 power reactors are in decommissioning

• 7 power reactors have announced they will permanently cease operations in the next few years

• New trends in decommissioning

• Business model at Zion and La Crosse Nuclear Power Plants

• NRC is evaluating the Vermont Yankee sale and license transfer from Entergy to a private company 5

Decommissioning Summary

• There are an increasing number of plants entering decommissioning in the United States, and the NRC is focused on the safe transition of these plants from operation to decommissioning

• The NRC has a strong decommissioning regulatory framework and experienced inspection program

• The NRCs decommissioning process will be further strengthened by applying lessons learned 6
