SUBJECT:
GENERIC LETTER 92-08, AMPACITYDERATING ISSUES - SUSQUEHANNA STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (SSES), UNITS 1 AND 2 (MA3417 AND MA3418)
Dear Mr. Byram:
By letters dated August 2, 1995, and February 4, 1997, PP&L, Inc., submitted its response to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's (NRC) Requests for Additional Information (RAI) dated June 13, 1995, and December 18, 1996, related to cable ampacity due to the application of Thermo-Lag fire barriers for SSES, Units 1 and 2. Your February 4, 1997, letter identified a commitment to complete examinations and do a detailed walkdown of the subject barriers by the spring of 1997.
In a letter dated January 6, 1998, you provided the results of the subject examinations; revised your previous findings relative to ampacity derating factors for electrical raceways protected by Thermo-Lag; and clarified your position with respect to the use of Thermo-Lag as a Regulatory Guide 1.75 electrical separation barrier.
The NRC staff reviewed your submittals and concluded (see enclosure) that although two open items arose due to your submittal dated January 6, 1998, there exists adequate assurance that Thermo-Lag protected cables installed at SSES, Units 1 and 2, were operating within acceptable ampacity limits. By letter dated December 8, 1998, you submitted a revised response that adequately addressed the two open items related to ampacity derating issues due to the application of Thermo-Lag fire barriers at SSES, Units 1 and 2. Therefore, the ampacity derating issues as identified in Generic Letter 92-08 have been resolved for SSES, Units 1 and 2.
Sincerely, PDR AOQCK 05000 P
