SUBJECT:

SUSQUEHANNA ENGINEERING INSPECTION 95-01

Dear Hr. Byram:

This letter refers to the inspection of your engineering activities conducted

by Hessrs.

B. HcDermott and D. Dempsey of this office from January 9-13,

1995,

at the Susquehanna

Steam Electric Station.

The inspection

was focused

on

issues

important to public health

and safety specifically, the identification

and resolution of engineering-related

deficiencies,

and the technical

adequacy

of design

changes.

The preliminary inspection findings were discussed

with

Hr.

G. Jones

and other members of your staff on January

13,

1995.

We found that appropriate controls for your design

change

process

are in place

and that the products

are technically sound

and well engineered.

System

engineering efforts associated

with safety-related

direct current

(DC)

electrical

systems

were effective in identifying arid resolving design

deficiencies

and technical

issues.

We acknowledge your continued efforts to

resolve subtle

and complex engineering deficiencies that affect the risk

significant performance of the high pressure

coolant injection system suction

transfer

and the leak-tightness

of check valves

between

the control rod drive

system

and the scram discharge

volume.

No reply to this letter is required,

and your cooperation with us during this

inspection is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Docket Nos.
