RESPONSE
TO NRC BULLETIN 93-02, SUPPLEMENT 1, "DEBRIS PLUGGING OF EMERGENCY CORE COOLING SUCTION STRAINERS" (TAC NOS.
H86624 AND M86625)
This letter acknowledges receipt of your 60-day response dated April 19,
- 1994, and a supplemental response dated June 17, 1994, to NRC Bulletin 93-02, Supplement 1 (Bulletin).
The Bulletin was issued February 18, 1994, for action to all Boiling Water Reactor (BWR) licensees, and for information to all Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) licensees.
The purpose of the Bulletin was to inform BWR and PWR licensees about the vulnerability of ECCS suction strainers in BWRs and containment sumps in PWRs to clogging during the recirculation phase of a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA), to request that BWR licensees take the appropriate actions to ensure reliability of the ECCS in view of the information discussed in this bulletin supplement, and to require that BWR licensees report to the NRC on the requested actions taken.
Your response adequately addressed the actions you have taken to assure the operability of ECCS recirculation.
We will await your report on operator requalification training which is scheduled to be completed by mid-August of this year.
Please retain any records of your actions in response to this Bulletin, as subsequent inspection activities may be conducted in regard to this issue.
Should you have any questions, please contact me at (301) 504-1402 or the lead Project Manager for this issue, John B. Hickman, at (301) 504-3017.
