SUBJECT:

Docket No. 50-238; License No. NS-1; N.S. SAVANNAH Availability of Funds for Decommissioning Reference (a) Letter from Mr. Erhard W. Koehler (MARAD) to U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), dated March 31, 2011, Submittal of Decommissioning Funds Status Report for CY 2010 and updated Governmental Statement of Intent for Decommissioning Financial Assurance.

(b) Letter from Mr. Erhard W. Koehler (MARAD) to U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), dated December 11, 2008, Submittal of Post Shutdown Decommissioning Activities Report, Revision 1).

In accordance with 10 CFR 50.82(a)(7), the Maritime Administration (MARAD) hereby provides notice of a significant schedule change from those actions and schedules described in References (a) and (b).

The Consolidated Appropriations Act for FY 2017 provides $24 million to MARAD for N.S. SAVANNAH decommissioning. The schedule in the PSDAR (Reference b) was revised by Reference (a) stating:

The revised decommissioning activities schedule is on the next page. Note that the timescale of the schedule for SAFSTOR is annotated Year I (Yl ), Year 2 (Y2), etc., for the SAFSTOR Preparations and initial SAFSTOR Operations activities. This schedule presumes that SAFSTOR activities can not start until sufficient funds have been appropriated by Congress; this event driven date is Yl in the schedule.

The SAVANNAH Technical Staffis currently developing a work plan and license amendment requests (LARs) to allow limited dismantlement activities and other safety enhancements to the facility. When the plan is sufficiently developed, MARAD will request a public meeting to describe it. In addition, the me~ting will serve as a pre-submittal forum for the LARs.

This letter contains no commitments.
