SUMMARY

OF MAY 23, 2017 TELECONFERENCE WITH NEXTERA ENERGY DUANE ARNOLD, LLC On May 23, 2017, a Category 2 public teleconference was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and representatives of NextEra Energy Duane Arnold, LLC. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the development of confirmatory success criteria analyses involving the Duane Arnold Energy Center. The meeting notice and agenda, dated May 1, 2017 are available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML17121A267. A list of attendees is provided as Enclosure 1.

During the teleconference, NRC staff presented on the background of the confirmatory success criteria analysis project, plans for the project scope, status of the MELCOR model development, and plans for the scenario and analyses selection. NRC staff presented the modeling assumptions, the probabilistic risk assessment sequences that may be used to frame the investigation, and the planned sensitivity studies of the four broad scenarios being investigated.

The staff also presented the next steps for the project. The staffs presentation can be found at ADAMS Accession No. ML17139D443.

During the presentation, no questions or comments were posed by the participants.

A closed portion of the meeting was subsequently held in which NRC staff asked several questions involving proprietary information related to understanding the as-built, as-operated plant (e.g., steam separator design clarification, vessel internals clarification, operator training and procedural paths for depressurization and venting under specific conditions). The answers provided to these questions will assist the staff in ensuring that the analyses performed are as realistic as possible.
