Susquehanna Steam Electric Station Unit 2 (SSES-2)

LICENSEE:

Pennsylvania Power and Light Company

SUBJECT:

SSES-2 CYCLE 2 EXXON 9x9 CORE RELOAD On May 30, 1986, representatives of the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company supported by Exxon met with representatives of the NRC staff in Bethesda, Maryland.

The purpose of this meeting was to discuss the upcoming Susquehanna Unit 2 9x9 core reload.

The Unit 2 Cycle 2 reload will replace approximately 1/3 of the total GE 8x8 core with Exxon 9x9 fuel.

The licensee presented to the staff its intended stability analysis.

In order to compensate for the lack of data necessary to deterministically complete the stability analysis the licensee has proposed to support their analysis by developing a stability surveillance and testing program.

This program will be effective upon restart with the Exxon 9x9 fuel.

The staff did not have enough information to deter-mine the acceptability of the licensee's proposed program.

The licensee is keeping in close contact with the staff in order to develop an acceptable stability testing and surveillance program.

The use of 9x9 fuel is fairly new to the industry.

Therefore the staff would like to be able to make use of the data collected at Susquehanna as applicable to the rest of the industry.
