NRR Reading EP-2 Reading TERA NRC PDR LPDR DMuller WRegan DSells/PLeech MDuncan JMCutchin SMiner As indicated to you by telephone on August 16, 1979, we have no record of receiving your August 7th letter.
- However, we understand that your letter to Mr. Huller dated August 17, 1979 repeats the earlier request for extension of the period for commenting on NRC's Draft Environmental Statement related to operation of the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station.
Specifically, you asked for extension of the August 21st closing date for some'ime beyond October 25,
- 1979, when the President's Commission on the accident at the Three Mile Island Station is expected to issue its report.
Our understanding is that the President's Commission is primarily examining safety-related issues and the attendant safety review conducted by the staff which is reflected in its safety evaluation reports rather than its environ-mental impact statements.
However, since the Final Environmental Statement (FES) for Susquehanna Steam Electric Station is not scheduled to be published until November 30, 1979, we do expect to review the President's Commission report in detail prior to publication and will consider any recommendations therein which are pertinent to environmental effects of station operation.
,9093sG I -
@'See previous yellow for concurrences NRC regulations do provide for extension of the comment period, upon request, for up to 16 days.
Therefore, we are extending the closing date to September 5,
1979.
We will endeavor.to respond to coments received after that date if they arrive prior to completion of the FES. If the FES does not include responses to comments received shortly before publication, the comments will at least be>
included in the
- FES, and responses will be submitted to the Atomic Safety an'g Licensing 'Board as a part of the evidentiary hearing.
.lie urge you to provide any additional comments you may have on the DES itself at an early date so that appropriate consideration can be given them during our preparation of the FES.
gcEg Sincerely, OFI IOa~
