Darrell G. Eisenhut, Director Division of Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation INFORMATION ITEM - SEMISCALE S-UT-8 TEST RESULTS (Board Notification No.82-124)
Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant, Units 1/2 San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Units 2/3 In accordance with present NRC procedures regarding Board Notifications, the enclosed information is being provided for your information as constituting new information relevant and material to safety issues.
This information is generic and may have applicability to all dockets with Westinghouse or Combustion Engineering plants.
The significance of these test results is that the phenomena of core level depression and loop seal clearing may be more complex than had been thought.
Level depression below the elevation of the pump suction piping before loop seal clearing is a new phenomenon that has not been seen previously.
The relevance of this is that the consequences of an SBLOCA may be more severe than had previously been calculated if the codes cannot model this phenomenon.
- However, we do not expect the new phenomena will be shown to result in violations of 10 CFR 50.46 limits.
We are presently pursuing the issue generically with INEL, Westinghouse and Combustion Engineering.
We expect to provide you with the resolution of this issue in the near future.
