SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 72 HOURS DUE TO NATURAL PHENOMENA (HURRICANE MATTHEW)
On October 6, 2016 at approximately 1115 hours0.0129 days <br />0.31 hours <br />0.00184 weeks <br />4.242575e-4 months <br />, St. Lucie Nuclear Station, Unit 2, performed a controlled shutdown and manually tripped the unit from 25% power as part of the normal shutdown procedure. At the time of this report Unit 2 was cooling down and was in Mode 4.
There were no complications during the reactor trip.
This shutdown was part of the licensees emergency plan requirements for Hurricane response.
The Hurricane Shutdown Criteria for a Category 1, 2, or 3 hurricane expected to hit the site, was to place the units in Mode 3 at least 2 hours2.314815e-5 days <br />5.555556e-4 hours <br />3.306878e-6 weeks <br />7.61e-7 months <br /> before the onset of hurricane force winds. For a Category 4 or 5 hurricane expected to hit the site, the units would be placed in Mode 5 at least 2 hours2.314815e-5 days <br />5.555556e-4 hours <br />3.306878e-6 weeks <br />7.61e-7 months <br /> before the onset of hurricane force winds.
On September 26, 2016, Unit 1 started a refueling outage and is presently in Mode 6 with a time to boil of approximately 11.8 hours9.259259e-5 days <br />0.00222 hours <br />1.322751e-5 weeks <br />3.044e-6 months <br />. The Licensee stopped all outage activities on October 4, 2016 and transitioned to full time storm preparations. The reactor core is in the vessel and the refueling cavity is filled to refueling level (60 ft). The refueling cavity is isolated from the spent fuel pool.
Resident inspectors are closely monitoring the licensees activities.
The State of Florida has been informed.
