UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-000 July 18, 2016 Mr. Edward D. Halpin Senior Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer Pacific Gas and Electric Company Diablo Canyon Power Plant P.O. Box 56, Mail Code 104/6 Avila Beach, CA 93424

SUBJECT:

RESPONSE TO REQUEST FOR SUSPENSION OF THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSIONS REVIEW OF THE DIABLO CANYON POWER PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION

Dear Mr. Halpin:

On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your June 21, 2016, letter that requests the NRC to suspend activity on the Diablo Canyon Power Plant, Units 1 and 2 (DCPP), license renewal application (LRA). The NRC staff acknowledges your request and is suspending its review of the DCPP LRA. Enclosed is a revised schedule that reflects the suspension of the NRC staffs review.

Although the NRC staff has suspended its review of the DCPP LRA, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is still required to submit annual updates to its LRA, per the NRCs regulations at Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) 54.21(b). In accordance with the NRCs regulations at 10 CFR 54.15, PG&E may seek an exemption from the requirements at 10 CFR 54.21(b), should it determine it is appropriate to do so.

Effective immediately, Mr. Michael Wentzel has been assigned as the sole project manager for the DCPP LRA. If you have any questions about the suspension of the NRC staffs review, the revised schedule, or any information regarding future developments, please contact Mr. Wentzel at (301) 415-6459 or by e-mail at michael.wentzel@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/

Jane E. Marshall, Acting Director Division of License Renewal Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Docket Nos. 50-275 and 50-323
