OF APRIL 12, 2016, PUBLIC MEETING WITH WOLF CREEK NUCLEAR OPERATING CORPORATION REGARDING THE APPROACH TO FIBER PENETRATION AND HEAD LOSS TESTING FOR WOLF CREEK GENERATING STATION (CAC NO. MC4731)
On April 12, 2016, a Category 1 public meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff and representatives of Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation (WCNOC, the licensee) and its contractors at NRC Headquarters, Rockville, Maryland. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the licensee's planned fiber penetration and head loss testing approach for Wolf Creek Generating Station (WCGS). The testing is part of the licensee's resolution of Generic Safety Issue (GSl)-191, "Assessment of Debris Accumulation on Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) Sump Performance." The meeting notice and agenda are located in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML16095A297.
The licensee presented information on the background and content of the proposed testing plan (ADAMS Accession Nos. ML16095A078 (Licensee Slides for the Meeting Discussion},
ML16095A092 (Large Scale Penetration and Head Loss Test Plan), ML16095A085 (Large Scale Head Loss Test Specification}, and ML16095A080 (Large Scale Penetration Test Specification)). Testing is planned to begin on May 9, 2016, at the Alden Research Laboratory facility in Holden, Massachusetts.
The NRC staff queried the licensee about several aspects of the proposed Alden large-scale fibrous debris penetration and head loss test plan and discussed potential challenges. No regulatory decisions were made at the meeting.
