Reference:

1. Offsite Dose Assessment Manual, Revision 35, Section 6.3.2, "Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program" This report is being provided in accordance with Section 6.3.2 of the Duane Arnold Energy Center Offsite Dose Assessment Manual (ODAM) (Reference 1), due to exceedance of a limit defined in ODAM Section 6.3.2. Specifically, routine tritium analysis performed over the first calendar quarter of 2016 exceeded the limits of ODAM Table 6.3-3. ODAM Table 6.3-3 reporting level for tritium is 20,000 pCi/L. The tritium concentration for monitoring well location MW-OBA, averaged over the first quarter of 2016, was 39,700 pCi/L.

MW-OBA is located within the site's Protected Area and is a sentinel well for the condensate pump pit and turbine building sump. Analysis of onsite drinking water found tritium levels below the lower limit of detection (LLD), and the tritium plume is located entirely within the site's Protected Area. No other non-natural radionuclides were detected by gamma scan at MW-OBA Therefore, there is no risk to the public or water levels.

NextEra has retained the services of an independent expert vendor to obtain and analyze additional samples to further characterize the ground water tritium in order to assist in determining its source.
