SUMMARY

OF MARCH 24, 2016, MEETING WITH SOUTHERN NUCLEAR OPERATING COMPANY REGARDING PLANNED PHYSICAL PROTECTION MODIFICATIONS On March 24, 2016, a closed meeting was held between the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and representatives of Southern Nuclear Operating Company at NRC Headquarters, Three White Flint North, 11601 Landsdown Street, North Bethesda, Maryland.

The purpose of the meeting was to inform NRC staff of a planned physical protection program modification at the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant (HNP), Units 1 and 2. The meeting notice and agenda, dated March 14, 2016, are available in the Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) at Accession No. ML16071A313. A list of attendees is provided in Enclosure 1.

The licensee presented information specific to the addition of an Early Warning System and the relocation/upgrade of security equipment. The licensee stated that the planned modifications and upgrades will require the temporary and/or permanent modifications to the central alarm station (CAS) and the secondary alarm station (SAS).

The NRC staff queried the licensee about the planned changes as they relate to the licensee's capability to meet regulatory requirements concerning the alarm stations and if any other regulations will be challenged during the project that will require a license amendment. The NRC staff also queried the licensee about the need for compensatory measures as a result of planned activities to include those currently specified in the licensee's security plan.

The licensee stated that they will continue to meet regulatory requirements regarding the CAS and SAS, along with all other security regulations during the planned activities. The licensee further stated that, as this project is still in the early planning stages, they may need to request another meeting with the NRC to further detail the specific actions and schedules.
