Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary February 2016

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for February 2016. This month, we captured forty-two (42) Caretta caretta, thirty-six (36) Chelonia mydas, four (4) Lepidochelys kempii, one (1)

Eretmochelys imbricata, and one (1) Dermochelys coriacea in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. Three sea turtles were sent for rehabilitation and there were three mortalities recorded during the month of February. All of the strandings this month were non-causal. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted for each stranding and the appropriate form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

One loggerhead and two green turtles were sent to rehabilitation facilities for non-causal injuries this month. On February 8th, a large subadult loggerhead with recent shark attack injuries was captured in the tangle nets. She had extensive flipper damage, including exposed broken bone in the right front flipper. Inwater Research Group biologists (IRG) transported the turtle partway to SeaWorld Orlando for rehab. On February 6th, a juvenile green turtle was recovered from the permanent 5-inch barrier net in poor condition. The turtle had numerous papilloma tumors and was underweight and lethargic. After consultation with FWC, Inwater Research Group biologists transported the turtle partway to the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, FL for rehabilitation.

Lastly, On February 15th, a juvenile green turtle was recovered from the primary barrier net that was underweight and lethargic. The turtle had a moderate scrape above the right eye as well as the upper left rhamphotheca. FWC arranged for transport to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehab. All of the aforementioned live strandings were considered non-causal.

There were three non-causal green mortalities recorded during the month of February. On February 6th, a moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle was recovered from the permanent 5-inch barrier net. There was

2 no obvious cause of death but the animal was too decomposed to necropsy. A second juvenile green turtle was recovered from the primary barrier net on this date; this turtle was severely decomposed. No measurements were taken because the turtle was no longer intact (skeleton, skin and some partial organs were all that remained). Finally, on February 7th, another moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle was removed from the primary barrier net. This was identified as a possible shark attack victim since there were a series of puncture wounds in both the carapace and plastron. It was believed to have been entrained postmortem because there was no fluid or foam in the oral cavity to indicate that it had possibly drowned. Nevertheless, the state of decomposition, as evidenced by skin slippage, precluded necropsy. FWC was consulted each time; none of the green turtle mortalities this month were considered causal.

Throughout the month, the permanent 5-inch barrier net experienced light loads of algae and jellyfish that entered into the intake canal system. Inwater Research Group biologists also performed around-the-clock monitoring of the intake canal and barrier net system while the power plant conducted minor equipment repairs and maintenance. Overall, the barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2016. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2003.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve Steve Weege Sr. Environmental Specialist Inwater Research Group, Inc.

4. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# JRG160206-01. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 2 {moderate},

Total Tumor Score = 64). Underweight & lethargic juvenile green recovered from the permanent 5-inch barrier net. In poor condition with numerous papilloma tumors. Deep moderate fresh scrape in 1st vertebral scute. After consultation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC),

IRG transported the turtle partway to the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota, FL for rehabilitation.

5. DEAD (NON-CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# JRG160206-02. RECAPTURE, from 1/24/16.

Moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle recovered from the permanent 5-inch barrier net. No obvious cause of death. Too decomposed to necropsy.

6. DEAD (NON-CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# RCW160206-02. Severely decomposed juvenile green turtle recovered from the permanent 5-inch barrier net. No measurements were taken because the turtle was no longer intact (skeleton, skin and some partial organs were all that remained). Weight was estimated at 1.0 kg.
7. DEAD (NON-CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# STW160207-01. Moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle recovered from the permanent 5-inch barrier net. Possible shark attack victim (series of puncture wounds in carapace and plastron). Believed to have been entrained postmortem. No fluid or foam in oral cavity. State of decomposition, as evidenced by skin slippage and foul odor, precluded necropsy.
8. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# STW160208-01. A large subadult loggerhead with recent shark attack injuries was captured in the tangle nets. It had extensive flipper damage and exposed broken bone. IRG transported the turtle partway to SeaWorld Orlando for rehab.
9. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# JRG160210-01. Subadult hawksbill recovered from the primary 5-inch barrier net in the morning. Lethargic and underweight, the turtle was behaving as if cold-stunned.

IRG transported the turtle to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehab.

10. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 8/19/09, 3/8/10, 5/30/12, 3/31/13, 1/29/14, 9/5/14, 2/25/15, 7/9/15 and 2/11/16.
11. STRANGE TAG (Inconel Tag in LRF), cold stun turtle from Cape Cod, released at Little Talbot Island on 4/16/14. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 2 {moderate}, Total Tumor Score = 78). FWC was consulted about possible rehabilitation due to the turtle's heavy papilloma load. However, all rehab facilities were full and we were instructed to release the turtle.
12. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 3/19/08, 6/28/13, 5/24/14 and 2/12/16. New Inconel tags inserted on this capture event.
13. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 1 {light}, Total Tumor Score = 1). Plastron measurement not taken.
