Limerick Generating Station Air Permit Renewal

Dear Dr. Cuthbert,

Im responding to your January 18th letters to both the NRC Chairman and me regarding the Limerick Generating Station air permit renewal. With respect to the renewal application for the Limerick Title V operating permit, you have provided your concerns to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PA DEP). The NRC will not be providing comments or endorsing your comments to the PA DEP. Please review the referenced documents regarding the environmental programs that we regulate.

All nuclear power plant licensees are required to annually provide to the NRC effluent release data for radioactive waste generated during operations. This data includes details on disposing of solid, liquid, and gaseous waste. The annual reports for Limerick Generating Station can be accessed through the NRC electronic database at www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html, or by copying the accession number into the search engine at the top right-hand corner of the NRC homepage www.nrc.gov. The 2014 Annual Radioactive Effluent Release Report is available at ADAMS accession number ML15133A123.

Specific data regarding liquid and gaseous releases can be found in the tables located in Appendix A.

As part of our reactor oversight program, we conduct routine inspections of the Limerick effluent treatment/monitoring programs, radioactive waste processing programs, and radiological environmental monitoring program to ensure that Limerick complies with Technical Specifications, applicable regulations, and regulatory requirements. These inspections are conducted in accordance with inspection procedures within the reactor oversight program, specifically: 71124.01, Radiological Assessment and Exposure Controls; 71124.05, Radiation Monitoring Instrumentation; 71124.06, Radioactive Gaseous and Liquid Effluent Treatment; Radiological Environmental Monitoring Program; and 71124.08, Radioactive Solid Waste Processing and Radioactive Material Handling, Storage, and Transportation. These procedures are available on the NRC website under NRC Library, Document Collections, Inspection Manual, Inspection Procedures. Based on our inspections to date, Limerick is in compliance with relevant requirements.

I trust that this information is responsive to your needs.
