RE: Tritium leak at Indian Point
Dear Mr. Blanch,
Thank you for your interest in the safety of Indian Point. On February 5 and subsequently on February 10, the plant informed the NRC of tritium identified in onsite wells at Indian Point. The plant is conducting an investigation into the cause and developing corrective actions. The NRC is inspecting the plants response through the resident inspectors and a specialist health physics inspector dispatched from the Regional Office. The results and details of the NRC inspection, which will answer many of your specific questions, will be documented in the 1st Quarter NRC inspection report issued within 45 days of the end of the inspection period (about May 15).
The NRC has determined that the current leak does not present a health and safety issue. The onsite groundwater flows west to the Hudson River. There are no public drinking water sources downstream of Indian Point as the Hudson River is brackish. Plant workers are also not impacted since local city water supply is used for potable water at the site. In addition, any tritium migrating to the Hudson River would be a small fraction of NRC liquid effluent release requirements. Unanticipated releases within NRC limits are permitted and these limits are in place to ensure that the health and safety of the public is maintained.
