Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary January 2016

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for January 2016. This month, we captured twenty-nine (29) Caretta caretta and thirty-six (36) Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. Six sea turtles were sent for rehabilitation and there were three mortalities recorded during the month of January; all of the strandings were non-causal. As with all sea turtle strandings at the St. Lucie Plant (alive or dead), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and a stranding form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

Four loggerheads were sent to rehabilitation facilities for non-causal injuries this month. On January 6th, a subadult loggerhead was hand-captured along the bank of the power plant intake canal. The turtle was emaciated and lethargic with three old wounds in the carapace. The wounds were deep, extending into the body cavity and not healed. There was also a healing gash in the head (not a fresh scrape). The cause of the injuries could not be ascertained. The FWC stranding coordinator transported the turtle to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation. On January 11th, a subadult loggerhead was hand captured that was in poor condition. The turtle was emaciated, lethargic and unable to swim (Debilitated Loggerhead Turtle Syndrome). After consultation with FWC, Inwater Research Group biologists (IRG) transported the turtle partway to the rehabilitation facility at the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne. On January 16th, a large subadult loggerhead was found resting on the bottom of the intake canal in shallow water. It was emaciated and lethargic with heavy epibiont coverage (Debilitated Loggerhead Turtle Syndrome). The cavity around the heart was visible and the plastron was soft and concave. The Loggerhead Marinelife Center staff transported the turtle partway to SeaWorld Orlando for rehabilitation. On January 29th, an underweight subadult loggerhead in poor condition was recovered from the intake canal (captured in the tangle nets). Longline monofilament was coming out of the mouth. There was also a large partially healed wound in the carapace which extended around to the plastron and into the body cavity. Multiple old wounds riddled the carapace, exposing patches of bone. IRG

2 transported the turtle partway to SeaWorld Orlando for rehabilitation. All of the aforementioned live loggerhead strandings were considered non-causal.

Two green turtles were sent to rehabilitation facilities for non-causal injuries this month. On January 10th, a juvenile green turtle with moderate fibropapillomatosis was proactively removed from the FPL intake canal with a dip net. Large sections of the carapacial scutes were sloughing off and reddish underneath, indicative of infection. There was also fishing line coming out of the mouth. The FWC stranding coordinator picked up the turtle the next day and transported it to the Mote Marine Laboratory in Sarasota for rehabilitation. On January 25th, another juvenile green turtle with moderate papilloma tumors was removed from the intake canal. This turtle was captured with a dip net while it was floating at the surface. It was lethargic and underweight, with moderate fresh scrapes. The FWC stranding coordinator also picked up and transported this turtle to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation. Both live green turtle strandings were considered non-causal.

There were three non-causal green mortalities recorded during the month of January. On January 2nd, a severely decomposed juvenile green turtle was recovered from the permanent 5-inch barrier net. The turtle was missing all of its flippers, its head, and plastron. Only part of the carapace and some internal organs remained. On January 13th, a moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle was recovered by hand as it floated down the intake canal. It was bloated and its scales were sloughing off. Although there was no salient cause of death, it was too decomposed to necropsy. Nevertheless, it was presumed to have been entrained postmortem based on the state of decomposition, as well as how and where it was discovered in the intake canal. On January 29th, a severely decomposed juvenile green turtle was recovered from the permanent 5-inch barrier net. The flippers were mostly decomposed and the carapace was falling apart. There were no obvious injuries or abnormalities.

None of the three green turtle mortalities this month were considered causal.

Throughout the month, the permanent 5-inch barrier net experienced light-to-moderate loads of algae and jellyfish that entered into the intake canal system. Inwater Research Group biologists also performed around-the-clock monitoring of the intake canal and barrier net system while the power plant conducted minor equipment repairs and maintenance. Overall, the barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2016. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2003.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve Steve Weege Sr. Environmental Specialist Inwater Research Group, Inc.
