Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary December 2015
Dear Meghan,
Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for December 2015. This month, we captured twenty-one (21) Caretta caretta and thirty-five (35) Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St.
Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. Five sea turtles were sent for rehabilitation and there were two mortalities recorded during the month of December. As with all sea turtle strandings at the St. Lucie Plant (alive or dead), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and a stranding form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.
Three loggerhead sea turtles were sent to rehabilitation facilities for non-causal injuries this month. On December 4th, a subadult loggerhead was hand-captured that was apparently suffering from Debilitated Loggerhead Turtle Syndrome (a general diagnosis for underweight and lethargic loggerheads that are lacking vigor). Ecological Associates transported the turtle to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation. On December 7th, another subadult loggerhead suffering from Debilitated Loggerhead Turtle Syndrome was removed from the primary 5-inch barrier net. This individual also had flipper damage (broken phalanges/bones and a large healed notch in the left front flipper). Inwater Research Group (IRG) biologists transported the turtle to the FWC field lab in Tequesta. From there, it was taken to the Miami Seaquarium for rehabilitation. On December 23rd, an adult male loggerhead was hand-captured in shallow water along the bank of the intake canal. It was emaciated and lethargic. The turtle was also impacted with shell hash and had several old necrotic injuries to the carapace. The turtle was transported to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton by the FWC stranding coordinator. These three strandings were considered to be non-causal.
Two green sea turtles were sent to rehabilitation facilities for non-causal injuries this month. On December 17th, a juvenile green turtle was removed from the FPL intake wells during the middle of the night. The turtle had entanglement injuries - deep cuts from fishing line in its neck and around the base of each front flipper. The
2 turtle was also wheezing. FWC transported the animal to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation. On December 17th, a juvenile green turtle with moderate papilloma tumors was captured in the tangle nets. It was underweight and in poor condition. IRG biologists transported the turtle to the FWC field lab in Tequesta. From there, it was taken to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation. Both of these strandings were considered to be non-causal.
There were two mortalities during the month of December (one causal and one non-causal). On December 12th, a fresh dead juvenile green turtle was found just below the surface of the water on the permanent 5-inch barrier net. Rigor mortis was already present and there was clear fluid and foam coming out of the mouth. There was also a moderate fresh scrape on the top of the head, exposing the skull underneath. The animal was held on ice for necropsy by Dr. Nancy Mettee. The veterinarian concluded in the necropsy that "drowning was the most likely final cause of death, however, there was a traumatic rupture of hepatic portal system (which can also cause fatal internal bleeding)." This mortality was considered causal. On December 27th, a moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle was recovered from the permanent 5-inch barrier net in the morning. There was a large bite or gash to the right side of the head and neck. However, the turtle was too decomposed to necropsy. The stranding was documented, and after consultation with FWC, the carcass buried. This last stranding was recorded as a non-causal mortality.
Net cleanings and inspections were also performed during the month. On December 1st, Underwater Engineering Services (UESI) cleaned the permanent 5-inch barrier net of all biota and debris. UESI also performed the quarterly net inspections on the barrier nets within the intake canal system (specifically, the 5-inch; 8-inch A-1-A; and 10-inch U.I.D.S. nets). No holes were uncovered during the quarterly net inspection.
On December 17th, the net was inspected a second time following the removal of a juvenile green turtle from the power plant intake wells. It was determined that the mesh at the bottom portion of the net was overstretched; divers subsequently mended the net by attaching rope in order to decrease the effective mesh width.
Throughout the month, the permanent 5-inch barrier net experienced moderate loads of algae and jellyfish that entered into the intake canal system. IRG biologists performed around-the-clock monitoring of the intake canal and barrier net system while the power plant conducted minor equipment repairs and maintenance.
The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2015. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2002.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

- 3. DEAD (CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# STW151014-01. Dead juvenile green turtle found floating on 5-inch barrier net. Scutes beginning to slough and eye bulging from gas accumulation. No other wounds or abnormalities. Preliminary determination by biologists was causal mortality due to drowning. Held on ice for necropsy. Final causality determination made by veterinarian. According to the necropsy report, "there was no evidence of compromise or disease significant enough to account for the sudden death of this individual." Drowning was therefore ruled the most likely cause of death. Sex determination made during necropsy.
- 4. Adult male. Tail length = 318 mm.
- 5. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# JRG151015-01. A juvenile loggerhead was captured in the tangle nets in the intake canal at the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant that was in poor condition. It had an old shark bite to its right posterior carapace and flipper; however, these injuries were healed. The animal was ultimately taken to rehab because it was underweight and lethargic. Tags were applied before rehab determination was made. The turtle was transported to the Marinelife Center in Juno Beach.

PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 2 {moderate}, Total Tumor Score = 26).
Tumors along trailing edges of front flippers; no Inconel tags applied.
- 7. DEAD (CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# CRM151019-01. Juvenile green turtle found floating at surface of 5-inch barrier net in the morning. Beginning stages of decomposition and evidence of light scavenging present. Preliminary determination by Inwater Research Group biologists was causal mortality due to drowning in FPL intake structures during ongoing power plant outage. Placed on ice & taken to Dr. Nancy Mettee, DVM for necropsy. Final causality determination was made by veterinarian. According to the necropsy report, the turtle had a congenital deformity in its cardiovascular system that predisposed it to internal hemorrhage. Because of its impaired vigor, the turtle may have been unable to withstand the physical stressors placed on it during entrainment. The turtle died from internal bleeding and the veterinarian deemed the mortality to be causal. Sex determination made during necropsy.

No other wounds or abnormalities noted.
- 9. STRANGE TAG (Both Inconel and PIT tags). Contacted Peter Eliazar from the UF Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research for original tagging information. Turtle was originally tagged by UCF during their "Lagoon Project." Additional information is forthcoming. Old Inconel tags were barely in and were replaced with LLP289 and LLP290.
- 10. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# STW151129-01. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 2 {moderate},
Total Tumor Score = 24). Juvenile green turtle removed from the primary 5-inch barrier net in the morning.
morning. The animal was underweight and lethargic with large fibropapilloma tumors growing out of its plastron. The FWC stranding coordinator Morgan Young picked up and transported the turtle to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation.
- 11. DEAD (NON-CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# STW151129-02. Moderately decomposed subadult loggerhead removed from primary 5-inch barrier net in the morning. The animal appeared to have succumbed to the notorious Debilitated Loggerhead Turtle Syndrome; there was significant body wasting and a heavy epibiont load. The turtle was too decomposed to necropsy. There was sloughing of both the scutes and scales and the carcass was bloated.
- 12. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# STW151130-01. Subadult loggerhead removed from the primary 5-inch barrier net in poor condition. The animal was underweight and lethargic (debilitated loggerhead turtle syndrome). Large healed notch in marginals on left side of carapace. Transported to rehab by the FWC stranding coordinator Morgan Young. Turtle went to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation.

NOTES
- 1. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 11/22/13, 1/25/14 and 12/3/15.
- 2. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# JRG151204-01. Debilitated Loggerhead Turtle Syndrome (underweight & lethargic with heavy epibiont coverage). Moderate deep fresh scrapes in right posterior carapace. Large healed notch in left posterior carapace. Ecological Associates transported the turtle to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation.
- 3. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# STW151207-01. Debilitated Loggerhead Turtle Syndrome (emaciated & lethargic with heavy epibiont coverage). Broken phalanges and large "V" shaped notch in distal trailing edge of left front flipper (missing 5%, healed). Inwater Research Group (IRG) biologists transported the turtle to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) field lab in Tequesta. From there, it was taken to the Miami Seaquarium for rehabilitation.
- 4. DEAD (CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# STW151212-01. Found one foot below surface on permanent 5" barrier net. Rigor mortis present. Clear fluid and foam coming out of mouth. Moderate fresh scrape on dorsal surface of head (skull exposed). Preliminary determination by IRG biologists is casual drowning. Held on ice for necropsy by Dr. Nancy Mettee. The necropsy findings supported the causality determination. The veterinarian concluded that "drowning was the most likely final cause of death, however, there was a traumatic rupture of hepatic portal system (which can also cause fatal internal bleeding)".
- 5. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 7/9/08, 12/6/08, 2/21/10 and 12/13/15. Multiple deep fresh scrapes on head (skull exposed & scored from moderate fresh scrape).
- 6. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 9/18/11, 4/26/12, 7/7/12, 1/30/13, 5/13/13, 11/14/13, 12/16/13, 7/15/14, 9/12/14, 1/23/15, 3/12/15, 4/14/15, 7/16/15 and 12/15/15.
- 7. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# JRG151217-01. RECAPTURE. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 2 {moderate}, Total Tumor Score = 23). Turtle underweight but very active. Shark rakings across carapace. Very soft spots on plastron. IRG biologists transported the turtle to the FWC field lab in Tequesta. From there, it was taken to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center for rehabilitation.
- 8. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# RCW151217-01. Juvenile green turtle removed from the FPL intake wells during the middle of the night. Turtle had entanglement injuries - deep cuts from fishing line in neck and around base of each front flipper. Turtle was wheezing when it would breath. Transported by FWC to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation.
- 9. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 2 {moderate}, Total Tumor Score = 5).
- 10. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/29/08, 1/17/14, 5/7/14, 1/27/15, 3/1/15 and 12/23/15. Deep moderate fresh scrapes in anterior carapace. Turtle missing 25% from terminal end of right rear flipper (healed).

Old injury mid-carapace on left side; exposed broken bone and necrotic tissue present (3cm x 8cm).
Old wound in left anterior carapace (2cm x 5cm). Soft plastron. Sex determination made from tail length.
Turtle was transported to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center by the FWC stranding coordinator.
- 12. DEAD (NON-CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# RCW151227-01. Moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle recovered from permanent 5-inch barrier net in the morning. Large bite or gash on right side of head and neck. Turtle was too decomposed to necropsy.
- 13. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 7/25/11, 10/21/15 and 12/28/15.
