Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary November 2015

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for November 2015. This month, we captured thirteen (13) Caretta caretta, sixteen (16) Chelonia mydas, and one (1) Eretmochelys imbricata in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. Two sea turtles were sent for rehabilitation and there were two mortalities recorded during the month of November. As with all sea turtle strandings at the St.

Lucie Plant (alive or dead), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and a stranding form was filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

Two sea turtles were sent to rehabilitation facilities for non-causal injuries this month. On November 29th, a juvenile green turtle was removed from the primary 5-inch barrier net in the morning. The turtle was underweight and lethargic with large fibropapilloma tumors growing out of its plastron. After consultation with FWC, the stranding coordinator Morgan Young picked up and transported the turtle to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation. On November 30th, a subadult loggerhead was removed from the primary 5-inch barrier net in poor condition. The animal was underweight and lethargic with heavy epibiont coverage (Debilitated Loggerhead Turtle Syndrome). This turtle was transported by the FWC stranding coordinator to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation. Both live sea turtle strandings were considered to be non-causal (not due to power plant activities).

There were two non-causal mortalities during the month of November. On November 25th, a severely decomposed juvenile green turtle was found on the barrier in the morning. The turtle was bloated with evidence of fish scavenging on the carcass. No other wounds or abnormalities were noted. FWC was consulted and based on the advanced state of decomposition it was presumed that the turtle had been entrained post mortem. As necropsies can only be reasonably performed on fresh dead individuals, the carcass was disposed of and the stranding was reported to both FWC and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. On November 29th, a moderately decomposed subadult loggerhead was removed from the primary 5-inch barrier net in the morning. The animal appeared to have succumbed to Debilitated Loggerhead Turtle Syndrome; there was significant body wasting and a heavy epibiont load. The turtle was too decomposed to necropsy; there was sloughing of both the scutes and scales and the carcass was bloated. Again, the mortality was reported and the carcass buried. Neither of the two mortalities this month were considered causal to power plant operations.

Throughout the month, the permanent 5-inch barrier net experienced light-to-moderate loads of floating sargassum algae that entered into the intake canal system. There was also a brief period of time when the 1

entrainment of moon jellyfish was categorized as severe, but there was no significant impact on the barrier net system. Nonetheless, Inwater Research Group biologists performed around-the-clock monitoring of the intake canal and barrier net system during the middle of the month when the influx of jellyfish was the heaviest. In addition, from November 25th through the 28th, the 5-inch barrier net was proactively monitored while the power plant conducted minor equipment repairs and maintenance. Overall, the barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for 2015. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2002.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Sincerely, Steve Steve Weege Sr. Environmental Specialist Inwater Research Group, Inc.

{moderate}, Total Tumor Score = 66). Turtle found on the temporary 5-inch barrier net in the morning.

It was stuck on the barrier net two inches below the waterline. The turtle was convulsing when it was brought onto the boat and promptly died. Preliminary determination by IRG biologists was causal due to drowning. Held on ice for necropsy by Dr. Nancy Mettee, DVM. The necropsy report stated that "based on the debilitated condition of this turtle death was imminent with forced submergence/ drowning as the final cause of death."

3. DEAD (CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# STW151014-01. Dead juvenile green turtle found floating on 5-inch barrier net. Scutes beginning to slough and eye bulging from gas accumulation. No other wounds or abnormalities. Preliminary determination by biologists was causal mortality due to drowning. Held on ice for necropsy. Final causality determination made by veterinarian. According to the necropsy report, "there was no evidence of compromise or disease significant enough to account for the sudden death of this individual." Drowning was therefore ruled the most likely cause of death. Sex determination made during necropsy.
4. Adult male. Tail length = 318 mm.
5. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# JRG151015-01. A juvenile loggerhead was captured in the tangle nets in the intake canal at the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant that was in poor condition. It had an old shark bite to its right posterior carapace and flipper; however, these injuries were healed. The animal was ultimately taken to rehab because it was underweight and lethargic. Tags were applied before rehab determination was made. The turtle was transported to the Marinelife Center in Juno Beach.
6. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 4/11/12, 5/6/12, 7/21/12, 12/14/12, 1/22/13, 3/31/13, 5/10/13, 1/18/14, 4/22/14, 9/16/14, 2/26/15, 4/16/15, 7/14/15 and 10/18/15. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 2 {moderate}, Total Tumor Score = 26).

Tumors along trailing edges of front flippers; no Inconel tags applied.

7. DEAD (CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# CRM151019-01. Juvenile green turtle found floating at surface of 5-inch barrier net in the morning. Beginning stages of decomposition and evidence of light scavenging present. Preliminary determination by Inwater Research Group biologists was causal mortality due to drowning in FPL intake structures during ongoing power plant outage. Placed on ice & taken to Dr. Nancy Mettee, DVM for necropsy. Final causality determination was made by veterinarian. According to the necropsy report, the turtle had a congenital deformity in its cardiovascular system that predisposed it to internal hemorrhage. Because of its impaired vigor, the turtle may have been unable to withstand the physical stressors placed on it during entrainment. The turtle died from internal bleeding and the veterinarian deemed the mortality to be causal. Sex determination made during necropsy.
8. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 7/25/11 and 10/21/15.
9. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/12/15 and 10/29/15.
