JOSEPH M. FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNIT 1 - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (CAC NO. MF6475)
Dear Mr. Pierce:
By letter dated July 17, 2015, the Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc. (SNC, the licensee) submitted a relief request for Joseph M. Farley, Unit 1. SNC requested a one-time extension from 1 O years to 20 years between examinations required by IWB 2412, Inspection Program B, which requires volumetric examination of essentially 100% of reactor vessel pressure-retaining welds in Table IWB-2500-1.
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has determined that additional information is needed as discussed in the Enclosure. We request that SNC respond within 30 days of the date of this letter. Please note that the NRC staff's review is continuing and further requests for information may be developed.

interval from 1 O years to 20 years for the inspection of specific reactor pressure vessel welds in,*
. accordance with the WCAP-16168-NP-A, Revision 3 report, "Risk-Informed Extension of Reactor Vessel In-Service Inspection Interval," October 2007 (ADAMS Accession No. ML113060207).
The NRC staff has reviewed the request and determined that additional information is necessary to complete the review.
Background:
WCAP-16168-NP, Revision 3, requires the licensee to report the results of prior ISi of the reactor pressure vessel welds.
Issue: to the July 17, 2015, submittal includes a summary:of the number of indications from the 3rd ISi, but does not include any history of earlier inspections or the specific location of the indications with respect to the cladding base-metal interface.
Request:
Provide the location and size of the indications that were found jn the reactor pressure vessel beltline area. Also, state whether this indication was observed in any of the previous inspections. State whether the size of the indication changed during the c'ourse of the three inspections, and if so, whether the size of the indication could be attributed to improved inspection procedures.
