UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REGION II 245 PEACHTREE CENTER AVENUE NE, SUITE 1200 ATLANTA, GEORGIA 30303-1257 May 11, 2015 Mr. Brian K. Taber Vice President Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc.

Vogtle Electric Generating Plant 7821 River Road Waynesboro, GA 30830

SUBJECT:

UPDATED ASSESSMENT FOLLOWUP LETTER FOR VOGTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT UNITS 1 AND 2

Dear Mr. Taber:

This letter reissues the Vogtle, Units 1 and 2, assessment followup letter (ADAMS Accession Number ML15089A503) with a correction to the time for which a White finding in the Public Radiation Safety Cornerstone will be considered as a U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) Reactor Oversight Process (ROP) Action Matrix input. This updated assessment followup letter corrects the date of the White Action Matrix input that was issued on March 30, 2015, in inspection report 05000424/2014009 and 05000425/2014009 (also ADAMS Accession Number ML15089A503). The quarter of the White input into the action matrix is being corrected from the third quarter of 2014, to the fourth quarter of 2014; based on the completion of inspection activities that occurred on December 12, 2014, and in accordance with the guidance provided by Inspection Manual Chapter 0305, Operating Reactor Assessment Program.

The NRC has determined that the performance at Vogtle, Units 1 and 2, to be in the Regulatory Response Column of the ROP Action Matrix beginning fourth quarter of 2014, because of one inspection finding classified as low to moderate safety-significance (White) in the Public Radiation Safety Cornerstone, and all performance indicators (PIs) indicated that your performance was within the nominal, expected range (i.e., Green). The White finding involved the transportation of Type B quantities of radioactive material in a Type A shipping cask.

Therefore, the NRC plans to conduct a supplemental inspection in accordance with Inspection Procedure (IP) 95001, Supplemental Inspection for One or Two White Inputs in a Strategic Performance Area, when you have notified us of your readiness. This IP is conducted to provide assurance that the root and contributing causes for the performance issues are understood; to provide assurance that the extent of condition, and extent of cause, of the performance issues are understood; and to provide assurance that the corrective actions are sufficient to address the root and contributing causes, and prevent recurrence. This letter supplements, but does not supersede, the annual assessment letter issued on March 4, 2015.

B. Taber 2

In accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) 2.390, Public inspections, exemptions, requests for withholding, of the NRC's Agency Rules of Practice and Procedure, a copy of this letter will be made available electronically for public inspection in the NRC Public Document Room, and in the NRCs Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS); accessible from the NRC Web site at http://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/adams.html.

If you have any questions regarding this letter, please contact Mr. Shane Sandal at 404-997-4513.

Sincerely,

/RA/
