UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REGION III 2443 WARRENVILLE RD. SUITE 210 LISLE, IL 60532-4352 May 7, 2015 Mr. Bryan C. Hanson Senior VP, Exelon Generation Company, LLC President and CNO, Exelon Nuclear 4300 Winfield Road Warrenville, IL 60555
SUBJECT:
ASSESSMENT FOLLOW-UP LETTER FOR DRESDEN NUCLEAR POWER STATION UNIT 2
Dear Mr. Hanson:
As a result of its quarterly review of plant performance, which was completed on May 6, 2015, the NRC updated its assessment of Dresden Nuclear Power Station Unit 2. The NRCs evaluation consisted of a review of performance indicators and inspection results. This letter informs you of the NRCs assessment and its plans for a future inspection at your facility.
This letter supplements, but does not supersede, the annual assessment letter issued on March 4, 2015.
The NRCs review of Dresden Nuclear Power Station Unit 2s performance has found that the units Unplanned Scrams per 7000 Critical Hours performance indicator has crossed the green-to-white threshold. Dresden Nuclear Power Station Unit 2s performance has resulted, during the previous four calendar quarters ending in the first quarter of 2015, in exceeding a value of three unplanned scrams per 7000 critical power hours of operations.
Based on the performance indicator results, the NRC determined the performance at Dresden Nuclear Power Station Unit 2 to be in the Regulatory Response Column of the Reactor Oversight Process Action Matrix beginning in the first quarter of 2015. Therefore, the NRC plans to conduct a supplemental inspection in accordance with Inspection Procedure 95001, Supplemental Inspection for One or Two White Inputs in a Strategic Performance Area. The objectives of the supplemental inspection procedure are to provide assurance that the root causes and contributing causes of risk-significant performance issues are understood; that the extent of condition and extent of cause of risk-significant performance issues are identified; and that your corrective actions for risk-significant performance issues are sufficient to address the root and contributing causes and prevent recurrence. Please notify the NRC by telephone and written correspondence when you are ready for this supplemental inspection.
