UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 June 2, 2015 Mr. Anthony R. Pietrangelo Nuclear Energy Institute 1201 F. St, NW Suite 1100 Washington, DC 20004-1218

SUBJECT:

NUCLEAR ENERGY INSTITUTE LETTER ON SECOND LICENSE RENEWAL FOR U.S. NUCLEAR PLANTS

Dear Mr. Pietrangelo:

Thank you for your letter of April 2, 2005, regarding the industry activities related to subsequent or second license renewal. We look forward to receiving letters of intent from the U.S. nuclear plant owners who plan on announcing their intention to submit a subsequent or second license renewal application. We acknowledge the various scientific research efforts that are currently ongoing related to technical topics associated with current and long-term, safe operation of nuclear power plants. The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is also performing various research efforts which will help us with confirmatory reviews of industry results. We look forward to reviewing the conclusions of this research and the insights they may have on effective aging management programs for nuclear plants applying for a subsequent license renewal. As the staff continues its efforts in updating the Generic Aging Lessons Learned Report and the Standard Review Plan, we look forward to reviewing the efforts of the Nuclear Energy Institute and industry in key research projects aimed at evaluation of long-term operation on nuclear components. We hope that the results of this research, and other public input, will lead to the development of a complete, accurate and efficient license renewal application and therefore an efficient review process, which may reduce the anticipated review time.

If you have any questions, please contact Steven Bloom of my staff by telephone at 301-415-2431 or by e-mail at Steven.Bloom@nrc.gov.

Sincerely,

/RA/JMarshall for Christopher G. Miller, Director Division of License Renewal Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation cc: Listserv
