UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 September 11, 2014 Mr. Jason Remer Nuclear Energy Institute 1201 F. St, NW Suite 1100 Washington, DC 20004-1218
SUBJECT:
INDUSTRY COMMENTS FOR UPDATING GENERIC AGING LESSONS LEARNED REPORT, REVISION 2 AND STANDARD REVIEW PLAN FOR LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATIONS FOR NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS, REVISION 2
Dear Mr. Remer:
Thank you for providing recommendations on behalf of the nuclear energy industry for revising the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) license renewal guidance documents, NUREG-1801 Revision 2, Generic Aging Lessons Learned (GALL) Report, and NUREG-1800, Revision 2, Standard Review Plan for Review of License Renewal Applications for Nuclear Power Plants, (LR-SRP). The NRC staff is revising these documents to provide generic guidance to utilities wishing to apply for subsequent license renewal (SLR) for operation beyond 60 years.
I would like to clarify that we have not requested comments at this time. As you know, the NRC held several public meetings to seek public comments on the regulatory process and the technical development for subsequent license renewal. These comments have been entered into our comments database and are available in ADAMS. Therefore, we have entered the industry comments into our technical issues database and have verified that all of the comments in your August 6, 2014, letter (ADAMS Accession No. ML14253A104) are in the database. The comments are being reviewed by the various NRC expert panels that are drafting the guidance for SLR.
We will be publishing for public comment the draft Generic Aging Lessons Learned Report for Subsequent License Renewal and the draft Standard Review Plan for Review of Subsequent License Renewal Applications for Nuclear Power Plants in late 2015. The NRC will issue a notice in the Federal Register requesting public comments at that time.
If you have any questions, please contact Bennett Brady of my staff by telephone at 301-415-2981 or by e-mail at Bennett.Brady@nrc.gov.
Sincerely,
/RA/
