Discuss the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) end-of-cycle assessment of Prairie Island Nuclear Generating Plant, Unit 1 and 2, performance for the 2013 calendar year.

General Details:

The NRC conducted an open house beginning at 6:00 p.m. central daylight time (CDT) where members of the public met informally with NRC staff to discuss Prairie Islands performance and NRC oversight. The meeting was scheduled from 6:00-8:00 p.m. CDT and ended about 8:00 p.m.

Three NRC staff members were present, including the Deputy Director, Division of Reactor Projects; Branch Chief; and the Prairie Island Senior Resident Inspector. No facilitator was needed.

NRC staff members greeted attendees as they arrived and offered a description of the purpose of the meeting and discussion of the Prairie Island 2013 performance. Prairie Island operated safely in 2013, with no significant inspection findings. Copies of the NRCs 2013 assessment letter were available. Contact information for the Prairie Island Resident Inspectors and meeting feedback forms were also provided.

Approximately 5 people participated in the meeting. In addition to NRC and licensee staff, meeting participants included a representative from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission, a representative from the City of Red Wing, the attorney for the Prairie Island Indian Community, a reporter from the Red Wing Republican Eagle, and a representative from the State of Wisconsin Emergency Management Agency.

Summary of Presentations:

No formal presentations were made. NRC posters describing the NRCs mission and the reactor oversight process complemented NRC staff member one-on-one discussions with the public. The flexible structure encouraged participants to discuss topics of interest to them with different NRC staff members spread around the room. These discussions included how the NRC assessed Prairie Islands 2013 performance and the NRCs oversight of the facility.
