PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION REGION III August 7, 2014 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE - PNO-III-14-008 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. Some of the information may not yet be fully verified or evaluated by the Region III staff.

LASALLE UNIT 2 SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 72 HOURS FOLLOWING A REACTOR SCRAM On August 5, 2014, at 5:34 p.m. CDT, LaSalle Unit 2 automatically scrammed from 100 percent power following the unexpected closure of a main steamline isolation valve located in the drywell. The steamlines carry steam from the reactor to the main turbine to turn the turbine and generate electricity. As designed, with the closure of the one isolation valve, the other seven main steamline valves closed and the reactor automatically scrammed. Plant operators and safety systems responded appropriately to the scram. Because of the licensees need to investigate the cause of the unexpected closure and to conduct the appropriate repairs, the reactor will be shutdown greater than 72 hours8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br />.

Unit 1 was not affected by the Unit 2 scram and will not be affected by the shutdown.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only.

Region III received initial notification of the scram by the NRC Resident Inspector, who responded to the site to monitor control room activities. The Resident Inspector is following the licensees investigation and repair of the valve. The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee, and is current as of 12:10 p.m. (CDT) on August 7, 2014.

The State of Illinois has been informed.
