SUBJECT:

DAVIS-BESSE DECLARES UNUSUAL EVENT DUE TO SMOKE DETECTOR ALARM IN CONTAINMENT BUILDING On July 8, 2014, at 09:35 a.m. EDT, the licensee declared an Unusual Event due to an alarming smoke detector in the plants containment building and the licensees inability, because of the location, to inspect the area within 15 minutes of alarm actuation.

Shortly after the declaration, the licensee reported that other detectors, in the vicinity of the detector that went into alarm, had not alarmed. There were no other plant indications of problems with equipment in the containment building. The plant remained at 100 percent power for the duration; there was no impact on plant operation or safety.

At approximately 12:45 p.m. EDT, the licensee and the NRCs Resident Inspector completed a containment entry and found no indication of fire or overheating of the few plant components in and near the area of the smoke detector. The licensee removed the detector from service, pending a further evaluation; fire detection capabilities are maintained with other detectors.

The licensee exited from the Unusual Event at 1:28 p.m. EDT. NRC Resident Inspectors will review licensees follow-up actions.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only. State officials have been informed.

The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of July 9, 2014, 6:58 p.m. EDT.
