Dear Mr. Miller,
I have been asked by Chairman Macfarlane to respond to your email regarding Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). I am the chief of one of the SMR licensing branches in our Office of New Reactors and have been involved with helping the NRC prepare for SMR reviews for the last 4 years. I want to assure you that the NRC is actively engaged with SMR vendors and is ready to review their designs when they are submitted.
With regard to the recommendations that you have about improving the civilian nuclear industry, let me suggest that you bring this to the attention of the Department of Energy (DOE) via The.Secretary@hq.doe.gov. Although the old Atomic Energy Commission was responsible for promoting and regulating the civilian nuclear industry, those functions were separated when the NRC was created in 1975. The DOE is responsible for promotion while the mission of the NRC includes ensuring that civilian nuclear power plants are operated safely and securely. Thank you for your interest in these issues.
