No: I-14-014 April 7, 2014 CONTACT: Diane Screnci 610-337-5330 Neil Sheehan 610-337-5331 New NRC Resident Inspector Assigned To Indian Point Nuclear Plant Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials in King of Prussia, Pa., have selected Garrett A. Newman as the new resident inspector at the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan, N.Y.

The two-unit site is operated by Entergy Nuclear.

Garrett Newman has the experience, training and commitment to safety that is needed for the NRC to carry out its mission of protecting people and the environment. Together with Senior Resident Inspector Scott Stewart and Resident Inspector Ami Patel, he will help ensure the safe operations of the Indian Point units," said NRC Region I Administrator Bill Dean.

Newman first joined the NRC in 2006. After completing the NRCs Nuclear Safety Professional Development Program and qualifying as a reactor inspector, he worked as a region-based project engineer, including stints as an acting resident inspector at Indian Point and Susquehanna. Most recently, he was a risk and reliability analyst in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation at NRC headquarters. Prior to that, he was a vendor inspector in the Division of Construction Inspection and Operational Programs in the NRC Office of New Reactors. He earned a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from Villanova University in Villanova, Pa.

Each U.S. commercial nuclear plant has at least two NRC resident inspectors. They serve as the agencys eyes and ears at the facility, conducting inspections, monitoring major work projects and interacting with plant workers and the public.
