SUMMARY

OF CONFERENCE CALL HELD ON FEBRUARY 20, 2014, BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND ENTERGY NUCLEAR OPERATIONS, INC., CONCERNING A DRAFT REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON LR-ISG-2012-02 AND DRAFT LR-ISG-2013-01 Representatives of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc., (Entergy or the applicant) held a conference call on February 20, 2014, to discuss a draft request for additional information (RAI) on LR-ISG-2012-02 and Draft LR-ISG-2013-01. A list of the participants is enclosed.

By email dated February 2, 2014, the staff sent a draft RAI to Entergy regarding the recently issued interim staff guidance (ISG) document on management of aging effects on internal surfaces of piping, and the recently issued draft ISG document on management of aging effects for internal coatings. In both ISG documents, the staff recommends that initial inspections of certain piping and coatings be conducted within five years and ten years, respectively, prior to entering the period of extended operation. Indian Point Nuclear Generating Unit 2 (IP2) is already operating in the period of extended operation, and Indian Point Nuclear Generating Unit 3 (IP3) will enter the period of extended operation at midnight on December 12, 2015.

Therefore, Entergy wanted clarification on when the initial inspections must be conducted, and whether conduct of the recommended inspections would be a condition of receiving a renewed license.

The staff stated that it understands the issue of timing for the IP units, and that an exception to the timing for the conduct of the initial inspections could be requested. The staff would review the exception and make a determination regarding the timing of the planned initial inspections.

The applicant had an opportunity to comment on this summary.
