Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary January 2014

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for January 2014. This month, we captured thirty-one (31) Caretta caretta, forty (40) Chelonia mydas, one (1) Eretmochelys imbricata and two (2) Lepidochelys kempii in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There were two mortalities and six sea turtles were sent for rehabilitation during the month of January. As with all sea turtle strandings at the Saint Lucie Plant (alive or dead), the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) was consulted and stranding forms were filed with the state through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network. None of the strandings in January were considered causal to power plant operations There were two noncausal mortalities recorded at the Saint Lucie Power Plant during the month of January.

The first was an adult hawksbill that was recovered from the bottom of intake canal during a snorkel survey.

Only the skeletal remains were present. The species was determined from the appearance of the remaining scutes. The straight standard carapace length was estimated at 75.0cm SCL, making it an adult turtle (sex unknown). The animal was likely entrained postmortem. The second mortality was a moderately decomposed juvenile green turtle that was found on the temporary 5-inch barrier net. There were several deep gashes in the ventral surface of the neck, presumably from a predation event such as a shark attack. In both instances, FWC was consulted and neither mortality was considered causal to power plant operations.

There were three loggerhead sea turtles sent for rehabilitation in January. The first two individuals were approximately 60cm SCL and were recovered from the temporary 5-inch barrier net on the same day. Both were emaciated and lethargic. Such turtles are customarily referred to as "Barnacle Bills" due to their tendency to be heavily encrusted with epibiota. Inwater Research Group (IRG) biologists facilitated transfer of these two turtles to rehab by transporting the animals partway to Sea World. The third loggerhead stranding was a subadult that was missing a portion of its posterior carapace due to an apparent old boat strike injury. The wound was open and still bleeding. There were also healing elongate wounds in the axillary region of each of the front flippers. This turtle was transferred by the FWC stranding coordinator to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation. All three loggerhead stranding were deemed noncausal to plant operations.

2 During the month, two juvenile green turtles with heavy fibropapillomas were taken to the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation. The first turtle was underweight and had a total tumor score of

37. This individual was transported to rehab by the FWC stranding coordinator. The second green turtle had a total tumor score of 47 and papillomas were coming out of the plastron and the mouth (sometimes indicative of pernicious internal tumors). After consultation with FWC, Inwater Research Group personnel transported this second animal to rehab. Neither of these incidents were considered causal to power plant operations.

One Kemps ridley sea turtle (subadult) was sent to rehab from the power plant intake canal in January. The turtle had extensive carapace damage - there was a large healing crack in right side of the carapace and multiple cracks in the plastron. The body cavity was also exposed by a 4cm x 6cm hole in the plastron. These injuries were not caused by entrainment (noncausal to power plant operations). After consultation with FWC, IRG biologists transported the turtle to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation.

Throughout the month, the 5-inch barrier net experienced severe loads of algae that entered into the intake canal system, whereas jellyfish entrainment ranged from light to moderate. The heavy accumulation of algae weighed down the temporary 5-inch barrier net and, consequently, Underwater Engineering Services was called out to inspect and clean the net on three separate occasions. During this time, one small hole was repaired in the net. In addition, Inwater Research Group biologists helped to mitigate the potential impact of the algae events by performing around-the-clock monitoring during periods of heavy debris intrusion. Overall, the integrity of the barrier net system was maintained and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net.

Bathymetric surveys of the intake canal were completed in January and Florida Power & Light, in cooperation with Orion Marine Construction, has already begun construction on a permanent 5-inch barrier net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2014. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St. Lucie Plant since 2002.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

2. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 1 {light}, Total Tumor Score = 4). Tumors appear to be regressing.

Turtle missing 25% from terminal end of left rear flipper (healed).

3. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# RCW140104-01. Emaciated and lethargic juvenile loggerhead sea turtle recovered from the intake canal ("Barnacle Bill"). Removed from the temporary 5-inch barrier net in the morning. Small necrotic puncture wound in the right side of the carapace between the costal and marginal scutes. Inwater Research Group (IRG) biologists facilitated transfer to rehab facility by transporting the animal partway to Sea World.
4. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# RCW140104-02. Emaciated and lethargic subadult loggerhead sea turtle recovered from the intake canal ("Barnacle Bill"). Removed from the temporary 5-inch barrier net in the morning. IRG biologists facilitated transfer to rehab facility by transporting the animal partway to Sea World.
5. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 10/4/07, 10/20/11, 7/21/12, 12/12/12, 1/6/13, 4/3/13 and 1/6/14. Turtle had an 8cm-long gash through the bone in the second left costal scute (healing).
6. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# STW140111-01. Subadult Kemp's ridley with large healing crack in right side of carapace (originates from between the 9th & 10th marginals and extends into the 3rd & 4th right costal scutes). Multiple cracks in plastron with the body cavity exposed by a 4cm x 6cm hole. Scar tissue and 1cm puncture wound in left anterior plastron. Injuries were not caused by entrainment (non-causal to power plant operations). After consultation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), IRG biologists transported the turtle to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation.
7. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding# CRM140114-01. Subadult loggerhead missing portion of posterior carapace due to an apparent boat strike injury. The wound was open and still bleeding. There were also healing elongate wounds in the axillary area of each of the front flippers. Turtle picked up by the FWC stranding coordinator and transported to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton for rehabilitation.
8. DEAD (NON-CAUSAL MORTALITY). Stranding# CRM140114-02. Adult hawksbill sea turtle recovered from bottom of intake canal during a snorkel survey. Only the skeletal remains were present. The species was determined from the appearance of the remaining scutes. The SSCL was estimated at 75.0cm (adult turtle, sex unknown). The animal was likely entrained postmortem.
9. STRANGE TAG (PIT & Inconel tag), originally tagged on 8/12/08 by South Carolina DNR Marine Resources off the coast of Amelia Island, FL. It was released the same day at 30° 32.459 N, 81° 24.407 W.
