Dear Dr. Buesseler,
On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your letter dated December 2, 2013, following up from your recent visit to the NRC. Thank you for sharing your insights concerning the transport of the radionuclides released from Fukushima Dai-ichi across the Pacific Ocean. The NRC agrees that while the available evidence leads one to conclude that the transport of these radionuclides will not affect public health in the United States, members of the public may continue to be concerned, and monitoring may help to alleviate some of that concern. The NRC is continuing its interactions with the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, other federal agencies, and the states in the Western U.S., concerning these issues to ensure appropriate public communications and to determine if some type of monitoring program should be implemented.
Thank you also for the important work that you do. The NRC recognizes that non-governmental, private research institutions, like Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute, contribute significantly to our understanding of science.
