These plans are tentative and subject to change.

OFFICE:

RES/DE/ICEEB REGULATORY GUIDE:

RG 1.210, Qualification of Safety-Related Battery Chargers and Inverters for Nuclear Power Plants, Rev. 0 dated June 2008 RECOMMENDED ACTION: Continue to use RG 1.210, Rev. 0.

REVIEW QUESTIONS AND RESPONSES

1.

What are the known technical or regulatory issues with the current version of the RG?

Regulatory guide 1.210, Rev 0 endorses Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) standard 650-2006, IEEE Standard for Qualification of Class 1E Static Battery Chargers and Inverters for Nuclear Power Generating Stations, published August 31, 2006. The IEEE standard is the most current version. In addition, all the secondary standards referenced in IEEE Std. 650 remain current with the exception of IEEE Std. 577, Standard Requirements for Reliability Analysis in the Design and Operation of Safety Systems for Nuclear Power Generating Stations, which has been updated from IEEE Std. 577-2004 to IEEE Std. 577-2012. However, the section of IEEE Std. 577 referenced by IEEE Std. 650 has not substantially changed in the new IEEE 577-2012 version. Therefore, there are no known technical or regulatory issues with the current version of RG 1.210.

2.

What is the impact on internal and external stakeholders of not updating the RG for the known issues, in terms of numbers of licensing and inspection activities?

There are no impacts on internal or external stakeholders from not updating the RG because there are no pending uses of this RG.

3.

What is an estimation of the level of effort needed to address identified issues in terms of FTE and contract dollars?

Not Applicable.

4.

Based on the answers to the questions above, what is the proposed staff action for this RG?

This review was completed in November 2013 and, based on the results of this review, the NRC staff concludes that RG 1.210, Rev. 0 does not require revision at this time.

5.

If the RG should be revised, provide a conceptual plan and timeframe to accomplish this.

Not Applicable.
