Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary October 2013
Dear Meghan,
Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for October 2013. This month, we captured ten (10) Caretta caretta and five (5) Chelonia mydas in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. There were no mortalities and only one sea turtle was sent for rehabilitation during the month of October.
On October 26th, a subadult loggerhead sea turtle was hand captured on the temporary 5-inch barrier net during a net inspection. The animal was underweight and extremely lethargic. After consultation with the Florida Fish
& Wildlife Conservation Commission, Inwater Research Group biologists transported the turtle to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center in Juno Beach for rehabilitation. This incident was considered non-causal to power plant operations.
The scheduled short-term power plant outage that began on September 29th is still in effect. Consequently, flow rates in the canal system and subsequent sea turtle entrainment have abated considerably. Baseline water levels in the intake canal are also higher during an outage due to the reduced flow rates as some of the circulation pumps are powered down. As a result, the 8-inch A-1-A barrier net became partially submerged in the beginning of the month. Specifically, a 10 to 15-foot span of the A-1-A barrier net was submerged at both the north and south ends due to the combined effects of tidal action and outage conditions. Underwater Engineering Services subsequently attached additional floats, effectively returning the barrier net to within proper specifications.
Throughout the month, the 5-inch barrier net experienced severe loads of jellyfish that entered into the intake canal system; whereas algae entrainment was moderate. Underwater Engineering Services has deployed divers, sometimes on a 24-hour basis, to inspect and clean the 5-inch barrier net as needed. Since mid-August, Inwater Research Group biologists have also been monitoring the intake canal and temporary 5-inch barrier net around the clock with regular reporting to power plant personnel. In spite of the heavy influx of debris, the temporary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net. To date, Florida Power & Light continues to work towards the installation of a permanent 5-inch barrier net.
2 The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2013. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet was added this year that tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St.
Lucie Plant since 2001.
Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
