INFORMATION ITEM - REPORT ENTITLED, "EVALUATION OF PRESSURIZED THERMAL SHOCK EFFECTS DUE TO SMALL BREAK LOCAs WITH LOSS OF FEEDWATER FOR THE COMBUSTION ENGINEERING NSSS" (Board Notification No. 82-10)
In accordance with present NRC procedures for Board Notifications, the enclosure is provided for your information.
The enclosed report addresses the subject of pressurized thermal shock of reactor vessels in Combustion Engineering designed Nuclear Steam Supply Systems during recovery from a small break loss of coolant accident with extended loss of feedwater. This report is of a generic nature and is not applicable to any individual licensee or applicant until the report is referenced by that licensee or applicant for use in his docket.
However, the enclosed Appendices H, I, and J to the report is an evaluation of pressurized thermal shock effects for San Onofre Units 2 and 3, Waterford Unit 3, and Palo Verde Units 1, 2, and 3. These appendices conclude that reactor vessel crack initiation would not occur for the transients considered for more than 32 effective full-power years.
