Marine Turtle Removal Monthly Summary August 2013

Dear Meghan,

Attached, please find the monthly summary of marine turtle removals for August 2013. This month, we captured thirty-nine (39) Caretta caretta, five (5) Chelonia mydas and one (1) Dermochelys coriacea in the intake canal of the St. Lucie power plant on Hutchinson Island. Two sea turtle was sent for rehabilitation during the month of August and there were no mortalities.

On August 5th, an adult female loggerhead sea turtle was captured through the daily netting efforts of Inwater Research Group (IRG) biologists. A general health assessment and inspection revealed a 3cm x 3.5cm circular puncture wound which penetrated through the carapace. After consultation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), this injury was deemed a severe fresh scrape causal to power plant operations. The turtle was then transported by IRG biologists to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) in Juno Beach for rehabilitation. "Big Mama" was promptly treated and was released on the beach adjacent to the rehab facility on August 14th.

On August 14th, a subadult loggerhead sea turtle was hand captured at the waters surface immediately after entrainment into the power plants intake canal system. The debilitated animal was underweight and lethargic.

There were no other wounds or abnormalities other than minor healed carapace damage and poor body condition. FWC was notified and the stranding coordinator picked up and transported the turtle to LMC the same day. This incident was not considered causal to power plant operations.

Throughout the month, the 5-inch barrier net has experienced severe loads of both algae and jellyfish that entered into the intake canal system. On August 18th, the temporary 5-inch barrier net began to sag under the weight of accumulating biota. Underwater Engineering Services (UESI) was immediately dispatched to clean the 5-inch net and remained on site on a 24 hour2.777778e-4 days <br />0.00667 hours <br />3.968254e-5 weeks <br />9.132e-6 months <br /> basis until August 24th. UESI also cleaned the 8-inch A-1-A net as a precautionary measure and continues to inspect/clean the 5-inch net during daylight hours as needed.

Since August 19th, IRG biologists have also been monitoring the intake canal and temporary 5-inch barrier net around the clock with regular reporting to power plant personnel. In spite of the heavy influx of debris, the temporary barrier net has performed as designed and no turtles have been observed beyond the 5-inch net. To date, Florida Power & Light continues to work towards the installation of a permanent 5-inch barrier net.

The tag numbers and morphometric data for all turtles captured during the month have been included with this report (see attachments/addendums). Also included is a spreadsheet for all captures, mortalities, injuries, and causal events delineated by species and by month for the year 2013. In addition, this spreadsheet also tracks fresh scrapes incurred on captured turtles for the current month, as well as the entire year. An additional Excel spreadsheet was added this year that tracks all causal injuries and mortalities incurred by sea turtles at the St.

Lucie Plant since 2001.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

NOTES

1. STRANGE TAG (Inconel Tag #SSR317 in left rear flipper). Tagging information sent to Peter Eliazar at the Archie Carr Center for Sea Turtle Research (UF). Back of tag stated "NMFS LAB. VIR. KEY, Miami, FL." New PIT and inconel tags inserted on this capture event.
2. REHAB (CAUSAL). Adult female. Tail length = 290 mm. Stranding #CRM130805-01. This turtle had a 3cm x 3.5cm circular puncture through the carapace. The injury was deemed causal to power plant operations after consultation with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The animal was transported by Inwater Research Group (IRG) biologists to the Loggerhead Marinelife Center (LMC) in Juno Beach for rehabilitation. The turtle was promptly treated and has already been released.
3. Adult female. Tail length = 195 mm. Turtle missing 40% of right front flipper (healed).
4. Adult female. Tail length = 202 mm. Deep moderate fresh scrape on head. Scale inoperable (estimated at 125kg).
5. Adult female. Tail length = 202 mm. Scale inoperable - weight estimated at 115.0kg. Turtle had partially healed damage to both front flippers and an old cut across the carapace. Injuries were consistent with a boat strike.

Animal was in good condition and was released.

6. Adult female. Tail length = 260 mm.
7. Adult female. Tail length = 200 mm.
8. Adult female. Tail length = 240 mm. PAPILLOMAS (Balazs Tumor Score = 2 {moderate}). Mating wound in shoulder.
9. Adult female. Tail length = 316 mm.
10. Adult female. Tail length = 200 mm. Deep moderate fresh scrapes in anterior carapace and dorsal surface of head (skull exposed).
11. Adult female. Tail length = 212 mm.
12. Adult female. Tail length = 217 mm.
13. REHAB (NON-CAUSAL). Stranding #RCW130814-01. Turtle was hand captured at the surface immediately after entrainment. Animal was underweight and lethargic. Turtle had a large healed notch in the right posterior carapace.

The stranding was picked up by the FWC stranding coordinator and transported to LMC in Juno Beach the same day.

14. RECAPTURE. Turtle was removed from the intake canal, tagged and released at Hutchinson Island on 4/20/13 and 8/18/13.
